Bird, Larry, b. West Baden, Ind., 1956. Basketball player. Never a great natural athlete, the "hick from French Lick" became one of basketball's all-time greats, with unmatched court sense and passing skills, and a deadly accurate outside shot. After leading Indiana State to the NCAA finals in 1979 against Magic Johnson and Michigan State, Bird signed with the Boston Celtics and was named Rookie of the Year. In his 12-year career (1980-92), the 6'9" forward led Boston to NBA championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986, and was a three-time league Most Valuable Player (1984, 1985, and 1986).
